News came out of La Salle University on Monday that sophomore guard D.J. Peterson has been granted a release to transfer. Peterson, who is a Minnesota native decided to transfer to continue his college career closer to home. Head coach Dr. John Giannini said that Peterson made a great contribution to the program his two years there. He also said in a statement that, “We greatly value his toughness, unselfishness and winning ways. … We will always think positively of D.J.”
The sophomore guard started in 18 of La Salle’s 34 games last season including all four NCAA Tournament games. Peterson averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game and shot 40 percent from three point range. In La Salle’s two point win over Ole Miss that sent them to the Sweet 16, Peterson had four rebounds and four assists.
With the departure of Peterson, the Explorers will need to fill his position. Possible candidates could be Tyrone Garland officially inserted in the starting lineup, Rohan Brown getting some more playing time off the bench, more playing time for Khalid Lewis, the transfer from Delaware who sat out this past season. Or it could be a combination of four young players in O.J. Lewis, Amar Stukes, Jermaine Davis, and Tony Washington, the newest Explorers commit.
