Recently, there have been reports that Nick Foles seems to be ahead in the QB competition with Michael Vick. They have both been involved in a timeshare through OTA’s thus far, and sharing the reps equally. There have not been many comments from Coach Kelly yet on how the battle has gone, and he has been very quiet in his first offseason as Eagles head coach. While he has been quiet some players have spoken up such as Desean Jackson. He said that, “We need to go into training camp prepared and know who is going to be our starting quarterback.” Jackson is right. The Eagles need to have their starter chosen so that there are no distractions going into the season.
Back when Michael Vick signed his new contract with the Birds it was thought that he was the clear-cut choice to start next year. Any QB that receives 10 million should be starting right? That may not be the case here. When Kelly was first introduced as head coach he said that he does not have to have a mobile quarterback running his offense when many thought this was the only way that he would succeed. Also, back when he was coach at Oregon he talked about how much he loved Nick Foles and praised him for his size, and big arm. If these examples don’t help convince you that Foles has the upper hand over Vick there is even more. The Eagles selected QB Matt Barkley in the fourth round of this year’s draft. Barkley is another pocket quarterback and does not fit the profile of a typical Kelly quarterback according to some. The selection of Barkley helps prove Nick Foles has a legitimate shot at being the starting quarterback next year since it shows that Kelly truly does not need a mobile quarterback to run his offense.
The Eagles training camp begins July 22nd and it would be ideal for them to have a starter chosen going into camp. The players simply want to know their roles going into camp and would like to eliminate all distractions on the field. The pre-season will be very interesting for the Eagles this year as the starter could be determined by who performs the best. With Vick getting a 3.5 million dollar signing bonus it is hard to understand why he got so much to be the back up, but all signs point to Foles starting. There are many opinions surrounding who will be the starter week 1 and the answer is likewise to how Chip Kelly’s offense will translate to the NFL level. We simply do not know.
