On Tuesday, the Mackey Award revealed their 2013 preseason watch list. If you don’t know what the Mackey Award is, it is named after former Syracuse and Baltimore Colts tight end John Mackey. The award goes to the best tight end in the country.
With that being said, sophomore tight end Kyle Carter was named to this list and that is honor with a lot of juniors and seniors already on the list. As a freshman, Carter flourished in Bill O’Brien’s offense and why wouldn’t he as we saw what O’Brien did with the New England Patriots tight ends. Carter caught 36 receptions for 453 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
In a few games last season, Carter had caught a lot of passes. In the first game of the season against Ohio University, he caught six receptions for 74 receiving yards. Then that next week against the University of Virginia, Carter would catch four balls for 33 receiving yards and scoring his first touchdown. In Big Ten play, Carter would have his two best games combining for 12 receptions for 162 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Expect Carter to have a bigger part in the offense as Penn State will need him a lot with two young quarterbacks behind center.
