As I watched the Dwight Howard saga unfold I was struck by several things. Teams were trying to get Howard to join them, but what were they actually using as bait? Would Howard ever be satisfied no matter where he wound up? Would he ever win a ring?
The Lakers had a dead man’s hand to play with an aging roster, salary cap problems, Kobe’s injury, front office missteps and a coach no one wants. NEXT! Golden State presented an interesting destination with Curry the Magnificent and a coach who seemed to be doing the right things. But we are talking about Golden State. NEXT! That left Houston. The team had the Beard and Linsanity and they were clearing cap space at a rapid rate. The taxes in Texas were very appealing. Yao Ming would introduce him to China and he would be a star. We have a winner!
The ego of professional athletes never ceases to amaze me. Howard has a propensity to make sure we all tune in to see what he is thinking. He gets the most out of his fifteen minutes just like Chris Broussard. But now he has landed in Houston. Is he the go to guy now? Or will he struggle to find his mojo? How long before Kevin McHale is on the hot seat?
At this point there are more questions and uncertainty than answers. I wonder if he will be happy in Houston. I am not sure they will win a championship in the next two years. No one really knows what makes Howard tick. He is a prima donna for sure. How many chances does he have left? Stay tuned. I think we will hear this before too long: Houston, we have a problem!
