The Phillies are going to be buyers at the trade deadline, but is there a way that the Phillies can sell and make the team better at the same time? There is.
The Phillies third baseman Michael Young has been one of the most consistent hitters for the Phillies all year. He has some trade value, and there are teams interested in him, including the Reds, the Red Sox, the Pirates, and the Yankees. While Michael Young has been hitting well, Kevin Frandsen has been hitting just as well. They have a similar batting average, and the only reason Frandsen doesn’t have as many home runs as young is because Young has 254 more plate appearances. Frandsen is also better at defense. Young has a WAR of 0.5, and Frandsen has a WAR of 0.8, so if Frandsen was starting everyday, then the team would collect maybe one or two more wins during the rest of the season. It seems that Frandsen is better than Michael Young, so it wouldn’t really hurt to give up Young, because Frandsen can just start in his place at third base.
If the Phillies traded Young, they would have a third baseman that is just as good, and whatever they get in return. They would end up with more than what they had before they traded him. The Phillies could probably get one of a team’s top 20 prospects for Young, at least. They may also be able get an outfielder, or another bat on the bench, that will be short without Frandsen.
It’s obvious that trading Michael Young will only do positive things for the Phillies.
