With training camp beginning this week, the quarterback competition is officially underway. Training camp is going to give each player a chance to prove why they are the right choice to start. The battle is exciting, and is going to be very fun to watch. Also, it is a very interesting competition because every quarterback on the roster has expressed confidence in receiving the starting gig.
Michael Vick, the starter for most of last season, had this to say.
“I’m confident in myself and I’m very confident. That’s the only reason why I’m standing here. I believe in me. I know what I can do. I know I’ve got a lot of years left to play this game.”
Vick truly believes he will be the starter, and that he is not done playing football. However, Vick is not the only Eagle quarterback that has expressed tremendous confidence. Nick Foles, who stepped in for the injured Vick last season said this.
“I’m not here to be a backup. I’m here to be the guy . I don’t think we play this game to sit on the bench. We play it to play, and I’m here to play .”
Foles is considered to be the frontrunner for the starting job, and he clearly thinks so too. He has all the tools to be a great quarterback in the NFL, but he has to prove himself in camp. If he can show off his arm strength to Coach Kelly throughout camp, I say he easily lands the starting spot.
Eagles Rookie quarterback Matt Barkley has made some shocking statements lately. He has told people not to count him out, and that he is very much in the competition. He said this.
“There is an open competition. I absolutely feel like I’ve got to be a part of it. I’ve got to challenge myself, just like any other guy on the team. Your mindset has to be that you’re in the race to start. You’ve got to have that mindset. I’m in a competition regardless of what everyone else is saying.”
Personally, I do not think Barkley is apart of the race, but I certainly view him as the QB of the future. Barkely has all the talent in the world, and I see him as a long term project for the team.
Training camp, and preseason will be very interesting to watch this year since no one has been named the starter. The fact that everyone thinks that they have a shot at the job is awesome. It shows how confident each player is, and that is an awesome sign for the Eagles. Foles, and Barkley could easily just say that Vick will get the job since he is the veteran, but they are showing that they want the job. It is going one of the most transcendent training camps that we have seen in years, and as preseason approaches, the starter will be soon be determined.
