Tomorrow at 7:05 PM, the Phillies will host the San Francisco Giants, in the first game of a three game series. The starting pitchers will be Barry Zito (4-7, 4.92 ERA) for the Giants, and John Lannan (2-4, 4.13 ERA). This is a great matchup of two tough lefties. It sounds like it will be a good game.
Lannan’s career numbers against the Giants are pretty amazing. He has a 1.74 ERA in 20.2 innings pitched. I expect a great start from him tomorrow; I will predict seven innings pitched, surrendering only two earned runs while striking out six. While Lannan has good numbers against the Giants, Barry Zito has very bad numbers against the Phillies in his career. He has pitched 50 innings against them, while having a 4.14 ERA, and striking out only 34 batters. I will predict four innings pitched, seven earned runs and four strikeouts for Zito tomorrow. I say this because most of the Phillies hitters have good career numbers against Zito, specifically Chase Utley, John Mayberry Jr., John McDonald, and Carlos Ruiz. Those four players combined have a .429 batting average, five home runs and seven RBI off of Zito in 28 at bats total. That’s pretty great.
Based on the numbers above, I expect a Phillies offense explosion off of Zito tomorrow. With a good start from Lannan, and a few runs scored offensively, I think that the Phillies can end their eight game losing streak, and get their selves back on the right track!
