The Phillies drew first blood in the bottom of the 1st inning, as Jimmy Rollins led off with a line single. Then, with one out, Rollins stole second base, and after a high throw by catcher Evan Gattis, Rollins moved to third on the throwing error. Chase Utley, then drove in Rollins with a ground out, and that made the score 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, Darin Ruf led off with a single to center. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, center fielder John Mayberry Jr. took a 2-2 slider and departed deep into the left-center field seats, his 8th home run of the year, and that gave Philadelphia a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Justin Upton hit his 19th home run of the year, to cut the deficit to 3-1, as he jumped on a 2-1 fastball, and deposited it in the left field seats.
In the 5th inning, it all fell apart for Phillies starter John Lannan. Joey Terdoslavich hit a line single to left. After a sacrifice bunt, Terdoslavich stole third, then Andrelton Simmons hit a grounder to third that Cody Asche misplayed for a error, and that put men on the corners. After an Upton walk to load the bases, Freddie Freeman took the first pitch and laced it into center for a single, to tie the game at 3. After Lannan was pulled for Zach Miner, who was just called up from Lehigh Valley this week, he forced Gattis to ground out to Utley, but that scored Upton, and gave the Braves the lead, 4-3.
Lannan on the day–4 1/3 innings, 4 hits on 4 runs (although only 2 earned), and he walked two with no strikeouts. In other words, a weak outing at best for Lannan.
But, in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Phillies tied at 4-4, as Mayberry hit a leadoff single, and after a Carlos Ruiz sacrifice bunt, with two outs, Rollins hit a line double down the left field line scoring Mayberry.
Braves starter, Brandon Beachy, did have a okay outing. He went 6 1/3 innings, and allowed five hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out two.
After both starters were out of the game, the relievers took over as they shutdown both offenses, in the 8th and 9th innings.
It remained tied until the top of the 12th inning. Phillies reliever, Jake Diekman, walked Justin Upton to start the inning. After Freeman grounded out that moved Upton to second, Diekman then walked both Gattis and Paul Janish to load the bases. After Diekman was pulled for Justin DeFratus, Dan Uggla hit a grounder to Rollins, but Uggla busted down the line, and beat the throw to first, to make the score, 5-4.
Craig Kimbrel, then finished off the bottom of the 12th for his 33rd save of the season.
On Sunday, the Phillies will close out the series on prime time tv, as Cliff Lee will go for his 11th win of the year, and he will face Alex Wood with first pitch set at 8:05 pm.
