Phillies D-Backs Game 2 Preview

Last night, the Phillies beat the D-Backs on a Chase Utley walk-off walk. That’s a pretty cheap way to win a game, but the Phillies will certainly take it. Tonight, the Phillies have Ethan Martin on the bump as they try to take game 2 of this 3 game series.

Ethan Martin has been shaky so far in his career. He has been good at times, but also very bad at times. He is unpredictable. Tonight, he will go against the D-Backs for the first time in his career. He has a very good breaking ball, and does have great movement on his fastball; for him, it’s all about location. Location, location, location. If he can locate his pitches, he will be effective. He is 2-1 with an ERA of 3.31 in his last 3 starts, so he seems to be settling in to the big leagues. If he can locate his pitches tonight, then I think he will do well. I am going to predict 6 innings, 9 strikeouts and 4 earned runs for him tonight.

The Diamondbacks will have Randall Delgado on the bump tonight as they try to tie the series against the Phillies. Delgado is a guy that has struggled with control in his career. He has a powerful fastball, but it doesn’t have much movement and he leaves it up in the zone often, and gives up a lot of home runs. He also has a a changeup and a curveball; his curveball moves a lot, but he has issues controlling it. Whenever he is controlling his stuff he is great, but when he isn’t, he’s terrible. He has pitched 13 innings against the Phillies before; he is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA against them. That is pretty good. I am going to predict 7 innings and 2 earned runs for him tonight.

Both of these pitchers have control issues, but can be very effective with control. Keys to the game for both teams: Location, location, location.
