The world of sports has a never ending plethora of story lines. This year is no different. Just when you think things can’t any stranger something happens to up the ante. Let’s explore some of the things that make me scratch my head.
The NY Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers have zero wins between them so far this year. Injuries have decimated the Steelers on both sides of the ball. The Giants on the other hand are just plain awful. The Eagles play the Giants this weekend. If the Giants win they will both have 1-4 records. I know Coughlin’s job is safe. Chip needs more time but that start would not be a good way to ease into your rookie season in the NFL. Time will tell.
The Yankees are out of the playoffs (I love it). But let’s give a shout out to Mariano Rivera for a Hall of Fame career. There will never be another reliever like him ever. We were blessed to see him work his craft. He was simply dominating.
Josh Freeman was released from the Tampa Bay Bucs the other day. This story makes no sense and I believe that there is more than meets the eye here. Greg Schiano ran a dirty program at Rutgers and his coaching style in the NFL borders on insanity. Is this nothing more than a personality conflict between QB and coach? Freeman will find another job soon and I hope he gets a shot to showcase his talents with a coach who has a clue.
Baseball does not play enough games (that is sarcasm in case you missed it). I have no clue why you play 162 games per year and then go to a one game playoff to decide the fate of a team. It got Dusty Baker fired (that and the fact that he is a good guy but he struggles making decisions). I say reduce the number of games to 154 and then come up with a better playoff scenario. Every year the World Series gets closer to ending in November. I pray a cold weather city makes the Fall Classic, soon to be called the Winter Frolic.
Bud Selig announced his retirement this week. I am thankful for that. I am not a big Selig fan. I will leave it at that. Okay. I want Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame where he belongs. With Selig out, I am hoping that Rose can get over the hump.
A-Rod is suing baseball. Forgive me while I laugh. This egomaniac has no regard for anyone but himself. He needs to look in the mirror and say “I screwed up. It is my fault and no one else”. He cheated, he got caught, and he needs to face the music.
Can someone explain to me why at youth sporting events there is always a parent that hollers at a referee: “You are not being fair”? The last time I checked athletes do stupid things and officials get paid to enforce the rules. Officials are impartial while parents are VERY partial.
If you get a chance you need to see the ESPN 30 for 30 movie on Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau. He was a phenomenal human being and was a great ambassador for the sport. I can’t figure out why he wanted to sail from Hawaii to Tahiti in a double hulled canoe. Eddie’s story deserves a look regardless of whether you are into surfing or not. EDDIE WOULD GO.
I feel bad for Andrew Luck. How does a guy picked number one in the NFL draft get overshadowed so quickly? This guy will be a star in this league for many seasons. He throws the ball with accuracy and has a high football IQ. I look for big things in the future from this phenomenal QB.
I know everyone hates Tom Brady. He is too pretty (and so is his wife). He is as accurate as a cruise missile. What he has done this year with a bunch of no named receivers is impressive. It proves that if you run an efficient offense you can throw the ball to anyone and win. Stop hating!!!
If you have not tuned into the NFL Red Zone yet on Sunday afternoons please do so this weekend. It is the only way to watch the NFL. Check with your cable provider today.
On a personal note it is great to see Arsenal at the top of the EPL (yes that is a soccer reference). I wish them well as the arduous season grinds on. There are no timeouts in soccer and they actually play in shorts in any weather. Soccer represents a complete team sport and the athletes are in phenomenal shape.
I will leave you with this: This week do something that makes a difference in someone else’s life. Be selfless rather than selfish. Try it. Eddie would do it.
