On Friday night, the Pirates beat the Cardinals to tie the NLDS at 1. Tonight, the Pirates and the Cardinals played game three, and the Pirates came out on top once again.
The top of the first inning went smoothly for Francisco Liriano. The same can not be said for the Pirates’ half of the 1st inning; the Pirates got two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a Marlon Byrd single to left field. That gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Carlos Beltran hit a single that scored Jon Jay and Pete Kozma; that tied the game at 2 a piece. The tie didn’t last too long though, because in the bottom of the sixth inning Russell Martin hit a sacrifice fly to center, and Andrew McCutchen scored. The Pirates were then up 3-2.
The Pirates lead didn’t last long either, because in the top of the 8th inning, Carlos Beltran hit a homer to right field to tie the game at 3. Beltran was single-handedly keeping the Cardinals in this game.
In the bottom of the 8th though, Pedro Alvarez hit an RBI single to right field; that would give the Pirates the lead for good, and they won 5-3. They now lead the series, 2-1.
