On Sunday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals in game three of the National League Division Series. Today, they played game four. The Cardinals came out as the victors.
Both pitchers in this game, Michael Wacha and Charlie Morton, were very dominant. The first 5 innings of this game were scoreless. In the top of the 6th inning though, the Cardinals scored two runs on a Matt Holiday two run home run. That gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
The pitcher for the Cardinals, Michael Wacha, was throwing a no-hitter through 7.1 innings, but in the eighth inning with one out Pedro Alvarez hit a solo homer to break up Wacha’s no-hitter, and his shutout. Alvarez was the last player that Wacha faced in this game; Wacha threw 7.1 innings, had 9 strikeouts, and gave up only one hit. Before the game, people were wondering why Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny gave Michael Wacha the ball today. Matheny said that he had confidence in Wacha, and Wacha was brilliant today. Matheny is a very smart manager, and had confidence in this right-hander today.
The pitcher for the Pirates, Charlie Morton, didn’t come close to throwing a no hitter like Michael Wacha did, but he still had a pretty good start. He threw 5.2 innings, gave up 2 earned runs, and struck out 4 batters. Not a bad start for Morton, but it wasn’t quite good enough to get a win.
The Pirates only run in this game came on a Pedro Alvarez home run, and the Cardinals ended up winning 2-1. The NLDS is now tied at two wins a piece. Game five will be held on Wednesday; the pitchers in that game will be Gerrit Cole and Adam Wainwright. That’s a great pitching matchup, and I’m really excited to see who will win.
