In Game 2 of the 2013 World Series last night, St. Louis Cardinals rookie pitcher Michael Wacha took the mound and performed dominantly once again. Ever since the start of the postseason, the kid has been lights out. He was so good in the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers that he was named the MVP of the series. If it wasn’t for Wacha, who knows if the Cardinals even make it to the World Series this year? So that left me wondering if Wacha will be a number one starting pitcher or just another middle of the rotation guy.
In four starts this postseason Wacha is 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA. Those numbers are pretty impressive in my eyes. His stat line last night was: 6 IP (W), 3 H, 2 ER, and 6 K. Wacha also did this on the road at Fenway Park, a very intimidating place for young pitchers. Here’s another outrageous stat for the young star: in all four games that he has pitched, he has only given up a combined 3 earned runs and 11 hits. Pretty scary numbers I have to say.
All this leads me to believe that Wacha definitely has the talent to be a number one starting pitcher in the MLB. The Cardinals seem to always have that one player every year which gets them going in the playoffs. In 2011 it was David Freese. This year, it may be Wacha that is the big piece for the Cardinals. Look out for this kid next year and for years to come.
