In a game where Temple led at the half 28-14 it became an offensive shootout by time the game was over. The Temple Owls lost to the SMU Mustangs 59-49 in American Athletic Conference play.
Today’s game was about both teams offenses and they came to play. Temple freshman quarterback P.J. Walker had a phenomenal game throwing for 293 yards and four touchdowns. Not to be outdone was his counterpart SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert. Gilbert had a slightly better game than Walker throwing for 538 yards and four touchdowns. P.J. Walker has a bright future in college football and it showed today that he is the starter for Temple for years to come.
Both quarterbacks also led their respective teams in rushing today. Walker had 92 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Gilbert had 97 rushing yards and two touchdowns. It just always seemed like every time Temple scored, SMU had a quick response to it, which made it an exciting game to watch.
In the receiving game for both schools, the wide receivers stepped up big time and made plays. For the Owls, junior wide receiver Robbie Anderson had nine receptions for 239 receiving yards and two touchdowns. But for SMU, both of their wide receivers had career days which ultimately won them the game along with their defense.
First, senior wide receiver Keenan Holman had 10 receptions for 209 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Finally, junior wide receiver Der’rikk Thompson had nine receptions for 158 receiving yards and a touchdown. If you like defense then this was not the game for you.
