With MLB free agency about to open on 12:01 AM Tuesday, Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz is already being a pursued by a team in the NL West.
According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Colorado Rockies are expected to pursue Ruiz. The Rockies are pursuing the Phillies catcher for his defense and not his offense. Last season, Ruiz hit .268 in 92 games as he missed the first 25 games due to suspension for testing positive for Adderall.
Even though Ruiz only played in 92 games, he hit five home runs and drove in 37 RBI with a .368 on base percentage. The Rockies want Ruiz to be a mentor for their young catcher Wilin Rosario. Last season in 121 games playing multiple positions, Rosario batted .292 with 21 home runs and 79 RBI.
Rosario played first base, designated hitter, and catcher. If the Rockies can get Ruiz, they would want Rosario to play at first base or either in right field sometimes. As a catcher, Rosario’s caught stealing percentage was 26 percent while Ruiz’s was 25 percent.
It will not be easy for the Rockies to get Ruiz as it seems like the Phillies have interest in bringing him back for the 2014 season.
