Since MLB free agency has opened, the Philadelphia Phillies have been quiet for the most part. But according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Cincinnati Reds free agent pitcher Bronson Arroyo is drawing interest from the Phillies.
Cafardo writes:
Arroyo reports that the Giants, Phillies, and Twins have called his agents but no offers have been made. Arroyo is the most durable pitcher in baseball and is likely to receive more interest.
Last season, the 36 year old pitcher had a record of 14-12 with an ERA of 3.79. Arroyo is durable as he threw 202 innings last season and has thrown at 200 innings since 2005.
The concerning issue about Arroyo is that he has given up a lot of home runs over his career. Last season, he gave up 32 home runs, 199 hits, and walked 34 batters.
The reason that Arroyo is a free agent is because the Cincinnati Reds did not offer him a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer last week. If I’m the Phillies, I would be interested in Arroyo since there is a huge possibility that Roy Halladay might not be coming back as he is a free agent as well.
But with the addition of Arroyo to the current staff of Hamels, Lee, Kendrick, and Pettibone, the Phillies pitching staff shall be formidable in the 2014 season.
