Mets Interested in Robinson Cano

It has been reported that the New York Mets are interested in free agent second baseman Robinson Cano. Cano’s agent, rapper Jay-Z, apparently met with representatives of the Mets last night to discuss the possibility of Cano signing with them.

Even though Cano would be a good fit on the other side of town playing for the Mets, it would cost them a huge amount of cash. The all-star second baseman asked the Yankees for a 10-year, $310 million dollar contract, but the Yankees refused and offered Cano a contract paying him anywhere between $161 and $168 million. Cano did not accept this offer.

It seems like Cano should bring his asking price down a little bit. I do not think many teams are willing to spend over $300 million on one player. If Cano does get this contract, it would be the largest in sports history. He is a great player and perhaps the best second baseman in the majors, but I do not think any athlete deserves that much money, regardless of how good they are.

The Mets have not been relevant since 2006, so signing Cano would be huge for them. They just better make sure that they really want to commit to Cano before offering him the largest contract in sports history.
