The No. 14 Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team has solidified is future by signing Coach Dana Altman to a three-year contract extension that will take him to the end of 2019-2020 season. The 2012 season was a highlight for Altman and the Ducks as they made it to the Sweet 16 after winning the Pac-12 championship. Altman, by leading the Ducks to a conference championship, was named the Pac-12 coach of the year.
In his last three years at Oregon, Coach Altman has a record of 73-36 which is good for a 67% win percentage. In 2010-2011, his first year, Oregon won the CBI tournament after finishing 7th in the Pac-12. In 2011-2012, Oregon improved to finish tied for second in the Pac-12 while making it to the quarterfinals in the NIT. Last year, with 28 wins, the Oregon Ducks won the Pac-12 tournament. So far this year, they are 6-0 and have handled their opponents. Their stiffest competition was the season opener against Georgetown. The Ducks won by 7 and have won by double digits in every game since then.
According to USA Today’s salary database for college basketball coaches, Altman will earn $1.8 million in 2012 which ranks 20th out of all reported Division 1 basketball coaches. We can expect that number to increase after last year’s success.
Contracts like these are important to recruiting success because recruits want to make sure that the coach that is recruiting them will stay with them throughout their four years. This contract will give potential recruits the security that was lacking during communications between coach and player.
