Today, December 6th, 2013, was an action packed day in the world of baseball.  There were many big signings:

  • Red Sox Re-Sign Mike Napoli: The Boston Red Sox have re-signed Mike Napoli to a two year, $32 million deal. Napoli supplies a power bat at first base, and he can also be a catcher. I like this signing by the Red Sox, because Napoli is a great source of power, and he is a really good piece to have in the middle of your linuep.
  • Nationals Sign Nate McLouth: The Washington Nationals have signed Nate McLouth to a two year, $10.75 million deal. McLouth supplies a decent bat off of the bench. It is likely that he will be the Nationals’ fourth outfielder, behind Jayson Werth, Bryce Harper, and Denard Span. I like this signing by the Nationals, McLouth is definitely a good bench bat.
  • Marlins Sign Rafael Furcal: The Miami Marlins have signed Rafael Furcal to a one year, $3 million deal that includes incentives. It appears that Furcal will be the everyday second baseman for the Marlins, because he’s definitely better than their other second basemen, Donovan Solano and Derek Dietrich.
  • Astros Sign Scott Feldman: The Houston Astros have signed Scott Feldman to a three year, $30 million deal. Feldman will be a leader in a young Astros rotation, that already includes Jarred Cosart, Brett Oberholtzer and Brad Peacock. I like this signing by the Astros, Feldman will be a good mentor for the younger pitchers.
  • Rockies Sign Justin Morneau: The Colorado Rockies have signed Justin Morneau to a two year deal that is worth roughly $13 million. Morneau is a good hitter, that supplies a nice bit of power from the left side. He will be thrown into a good Rockies lineup, and he is certainly a great addition to it.
  • Mets Sign Curtis Granderson: The New York Mets have signed Curtis Granderson to a four year, $60 million deal. Granderson has battled many injuries recently, and that is a problem. The Mets are bringing him in in hopes that they will be a decent team next season, but the odds of Granderson staying healthy for the majority of the season is doubtful, as he has proved to be injury prone, and he is 33 years old. I’m not a fan of the signing by the Mets. I feel that there money could have been better spent elsewhere.
  • Mariners Sign Robinson Cano: The Seattle Mariners have signed Robinson Cano to a ten year, $240 million deal. Cano was the best free agent in this free agent class, and everyone knew that he was going to get a huge deal, and he most certainly did. $240 million is a lot of money to commit to one player for ten years, but I think that the Mariners did a good job with this signing. They have a couple of nice prospects in their farm system, and they have a rather young lineup. I think that the signing of Cano makes them a legitimate contender in the American League West.
