The Pittsburgh Pirates and RHP Edinson Volquez have come to terms on a one-year , $5 million deal on Wednesday.
Volquez, will be entering his 10th MLB season next year with a compiled record of 53-52 with a career ERA of 4.75.
Last season the right hander went 9-12 with an ERA of 5.71 for the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Signing Volquez seems to make an A.J Burnett return unlikely for the Pirates as the 36-year old is contemplating whether or not to hang up the cleats. Volquez will join a rotation that boasted Charlie Morton , Gerrit Cole , Jeff Locke , Wandy Rodriguez and Francisco Liriano. The Pirates pitching last year was superb ranking in the top 10 in team ERA , WHIP , and BAA while having the 17th lowest amount of quality starts.
Volquez, has shown inconsistency over the his career as his year-by-year numbers show but at times could flash some great pitching at the same time. The 30-year olds best season came in 2008 at the age of 24 when he went 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA for the Cincinnati Reds. Since then Volquez, has only notched more than nine wins once, when he went 11-11 in 2012 for the Padres while posting a 4.14 ERA.
