Gus Malzahn was awarded the Associated Press College Football Coach of the Year award after turning around an Auburn Tigers team and leading them to the national championship, a year after finishing 3-9. Malzahn brings just the second coach of the year award to Auburn with Tommy Tuberville last winning it while at the helm of the Tigers in 004. Overall, five Southeaster Conferences coaches have won the award.

Malzahn’s biggest feat was recruiting junior college quarterback Nick Marshall to run his no-huddle offense. Marshall has turned out to be the best fit in Malzahn’s run first offense. Tre Mason, running back, has benefited from this offense and was named a Heisman Trophy finalist after an outstanding year.

On December 6th, Auburn realized that they wanted Malzahn to stay at Auburn for the foreseeable future. He was given a six-year extension starting out at $3.85 million per year with a $250,000 raise each year. This contract will take Malzahn to the end of 2019 if he elects to finish out the contract.

This will be money well spent for a college that desperately needed a savior for their football team and found one in Gus Malzahn.
