What a great game to close out a crazy Wildcard weekend that was filled with comebacks and close game, and the Packers taking on the 49ers was no exception. This game also ended in a tight one, with a final score of 23-20 and the winner was the 49ers. It’s hard to believe that with these two teams history over the past two years that this game struggled to sell out the stadium. Good ole’ mother nature almost forced that to happen as this game was played in single digit temperatures with a wind chill that was below zero. Yet and still, the historic Lambeau Field sold out for this big game.
The weather had a huge effect on what both the Packers and 49ers were able to do threw the air with the football. As the ball was cold, hard and difficult to grip to throw. Colin Kaepernick was still able to stock pile 227 yards threw the air off of 16 receptions of 30 attempts with one touchdown and one interception. Kaepernicks favorite wide receiver today was Michael Crabtree who has been coming on strong after he returned from his ruptured achilles, he had 8 catches for 125 yards. The player behind him was Boldin and he only had 3 catches for 38 yards. Definitely was Kaepernicks best throwing days but he didn’t do anything that would cause them to lose the game. Today the running game was huge for San Francisco because of the frigid air. Frank Gore one of the most underrated and under appreciated running backs in the league ran 20 times for 66 yards and one touchdown. While Kaepernick ran 7 times for a whopping 98 yards on the ground for this young athletic quarterback. Between the two runners their was 164 rushing yards between them both. They averaged 5.6 rushing yards a carry on a defense that already had issues stopping the run and they were missing they’re best defensive player in Clay Matthews. This game definitely took a team effort to win.
When it comes to that “BAD MAN” Aaron Rogers, he didn’t play too great, but he also didn’t do anything to harm his team. He threw 26 times with 17 receptions and one touchdown and no interceptions. Jordy Nelson was his top receiver with 7 catches for 62 yards. He has been a key part of that offense even when Aaron rogers was out. Eddie Lacy ran 21 times for 81 yards. No, touchdowns for Lacy. The defense was lack-luster all season and it didn’t come up with a big stop on a 3rd and 8 play where Kaepernick scrambled with the ball and got the first down that sealed the deal.
The San Francisco 49ers move on to play the Carolina Panthers in a divisional game. This is going to be the clash of two loaded defenses and is sure to be a good one. A classic chess match as both teams have mobile quarterbacks and deep ball threats at they’re disposal. Not to mention they both have solid running backs that contribute in more than one way. I think that the San Francisco is playing the best football overall and I have them winning this game by a total of 4 points, with a score of 21-17. What a great way to end the weekend.
