Rumor: NFL To Expand Playoffs

IMAG0543

According to Andrew Perloff who is on the Dan Patrick Show, Dan Patrick has been told that the NFL will add an additional two playoff spots, one wild card team to each conference.

Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones, last week brought up playoff expansion when on ESPN 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.

“From the standpoint of looking at how exciting it is for a city or a community to be involved in the playoffs and the fact that you can have a team that might have literally operated at .500 or in that area … you can have that team win the Super Bowl, That makes a big case for adding a couple of more cities or communities that have NFL teams to the playoffs.”

Jones has been frustrated the past four seasons as the Cowboys have failed to win four consecutive win-or-die games to go to the playoffs in the final week of the season.

If, this is really true and the NFL will add two teams that will make it 14 teams in the playoffs as it will be four division winners and three wild-card winners from each conference, to make it seven total teams in each conference. It seems as though that would mean that only the one-seed with not play in the first round as it would be 2 vs 7 , 3 vs 6 , 4 vs 5.

If this had been in effect this year, the playoffs would have looked like this:

AFC:

  1. Denver Broncos
  2. New England Patriots
  3. Cincinnati Bengals
  4. Indianapolis Colts
  5. Kansas City Chiefs
  6. San Diego Chargers
  7. Pittsburgh Steelers

NFC:

  1. Seattle Seahawks
  2. Carolina Panthers
  3. Philadelphia Eagles
  4. Green Bay Packers
  5. San Francisco 49ers
  6. New Orleans Saints
  7. Arizona Cardinals

Though the report has not been confirmed and these are only rumors, it certainly makes the playoffs a little more interesting. It may not be the two more spots that Jerry Jones wants but , Jerry Jones may not even know that even if the NFL added not one but two additional spots, the Cowboys would still miss the playoffs everytime the last four years.

Ian Rappaport of NFL.com seems to have voided the rumor.
