This past week I was able to interview Penn State  offensive-lineman “run-on commit” Charlie Shuman.
Name: Charlie Shuman
High School: Pittsford Sutherland
Position: OL
Commitment Date: 12/23/13
Twitter: @BigCShu71

1. Since you’re a preferred walk on commit, introduce yourself to the fans and tell them “Who you are”
I am 18 years old from Pittsford, NY. I am a national football foundation scholar athlete and an Eagle Scout. I take pride in my work on the football field and in the classroom. I put everything I have into being the best that I possibly can. I am going to be a Pre-Med major.
2. When did you “commit” to Penn State? Did you have any other Division One offers?
I committed on December 23, 2013 and my only other scholarship offer was Old Dominion.
3. How would you describe your game?
I am a big, strong kid that likes to move kids around. Throughout High School, my team was run first, so I play aggressively off the ball.

4. What ultimately lead to your decommitment from Old Dominion?

Penn State is my dream school and my dream football team. I have always wanted to play on that field and for that school. Finally my hard work paid off and I got a chance to play there and I wasn’t going to pass that opportunity up.

 5. What ultimately lead to your commitment to Penn State?

It was my dream school and dream team and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to play there even if it was giving up a scholarship to walk on.

 6. You originally committed under Bill O’Brien, after he left for the Houston  Texans did you have any doubts in your mind about your commitment?

I never talked to Coach O’Brien personally and I was assured that my spot would be safe, so I was not too worried after word got out that he was leaving.

 7. Have you had the opportunity to talk to Coach James Franklin yet? if so, what did he have to say?

Yes, I talked to Coach Franklin on Saturday and he told me he was sorry that it took him so long to get in contact with me. He said he was looking forward to getting to know me better and happy that I was going to be a part of the team.

8. Have you had the opportunity to talk to Coach Herb Hand yet? If so, what did he have to say?

Not on the phone, but he direct messaged me and said “This is going to be great. Looking forward to meeting you as well”

9. Who are your biggest inspirations on and off the field?

John Urschel and Craig Winter. I look up to John because I am all about being a scholar athlete and having success both on and off the field. He will be someone that I look up to when I am at Penn State, Craig Winter is a young boy in my community that is battling a rare form of cancer in his brain and back. He is three years old and he is fighting for his life. I had the opportunity to play for him in a game this year and I will always wear a bracket that says his name and “One Tough Cookie” on it.
10. What about Penn State makes it such a unique place to play?
The atmosphere and the fact that there are 107,000 fans at every game.

11.  What are your thoughts on Christian Hackenberg and are you excited to be playing with him?

I am excited to get to know him and see him continue to improve. I can’t wait to see how far he can take this program

12. To you what does it mean to be a PSU student-athlete?

It means more than anything, it is my dream, I can’t wait to get started and develop as a person and an athlete, it’s going to be a lot of

13. What Big Ten team(s) are you most looking forward to playing?

Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State
