All week long you are going to hear how Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning can’t win the big game. This is justifiable by looking at his playoff record and the fact that he only has one Super Bowl victory. But, this shouldn’t take away from the greatness that he has accomplished throughout his career.
Manning is best known as the “greatest regular season quarterback ever” because of the regular season records that he holds and the fact that his team usually always makes the playoffs. He broke the regular season passing touchdown record twice, and this season he topped Drew Brees’ record for most passing yards in a season. Manning won the NFL MVP this season, which was the fifth time that he received the honor. No other NFL player has ever won more than three MVP awards, so there is another distinction that Manning has which no one can hold against him.
By the time Manning retires, he will most likely be first in most of the major passing records (yards, touchdowns, completions). He trails only Brett Favre in all three of these categories. Any quarterback who can own these records after retiring has to be in the discussion of the top QBs of all time. Just because he is 1-2 in Super Bowls doesn’t take away from his greatness.
It seems like Manning still has some more time left in the league, as he has three more years left on his contract with the Denver Broncos. Three more seasons means three more opportunities to get another Super Bowl victory. Let’s hope this eventually happens so that Manning’s legacy can grow even larger than it already is.
