As a new week begins, the Philadelphia Eagles re-sign another key member to their team. This time it is on the defensive side of the ball as today they re-signed defensive end Cedric Thornton to a one-year deal. Also about this deal, Thornton was an exclusive rights free agent.
In a good move by the Eagles, Thornton was really solid on the defensive line and brought stability to Billy Davis’ 3-4 defense. This past season, Thornton started all 16 games and had 60 tackles. He has also had one sack and one forced fumble.
It’s great to see Thornton playing so well as he was an undrafted rookie back in 2011 coming out of Southern Arkansas. With Thornton being only 25 years old he seems to be a key member of the Eagles’ defense going forward.
This was Thornton’s best year so far as a pro as he surpassed his 2012 stats. In 2012, Thornton again played in all 16 games but only had 27 tackles and one forced fumble. The signing of Thornton means that the Eagles are looking towards the future especially as this team gets more acclimated with the 3-4 defense.
Finally, in terms of next offseason, he will be eligible for restricted free agency but knowing the Eagles if Thornton performs well they will sign him long term.
