Today, cornerback Vontae Davis re-signed with the Indianapolis Colts. The cornerback has agreed to a four-year, $39 million deal, including $20 million guaranteed. Vontae Davis played at a high level last season and he is starting to become the player that so many coaches, scouts, and general managers around the league thought he would become out of the University of Illinois. Owner Jim Irsay announced the deal on Twitter.
“Glad to Welcome back Vontae Davis to the team!” Irsay wrote. All signs pointed to Davis returning with the Indianapolis Colts in 2014. Both asides wanted to get a deal done and when fellow free-agent cornerback Sam Shields signed a four-year, $39 million with the Green Bay Packers, it set the market for cornerbacks and it also gave Davis camp the bargaining chip they need to get this deal done.
At 25 years old, the cornerback is considered one of the better cover corners in the league and helped the Colts reach the playoffs for the second straight season since being traded from Miami in 2012.
Davis, drafted 25th overall by the Dolphins in 2009, had 46 tackles, an interception and tied his career high with 12 passes defend last season. In his first five seasons in the NFL, Davis has defended 51 passes, 13 interceptions and two forced fumbles.
So people believe that Vontae is not worth the money because of his inconsistent play and behavior on and off the field but nobody can question his talent. When Davis is at his best he can matchup with opposing teams’ best wide receiver and take them out of games.
He has solid size at 5’11 and 204 pounds. Davis has great footwork, smooth hips and is a great athlete with solid coverage skills. With that being said his biggest strength is his physicality at the line scrimmage which allows him to excel in press coverage. He is the kind of player that defensive coordinator, Greg Manusky can build his game plan around & head coach, Chuck Pagano & Ryan Grigson general manager can build their defense around for years to come.
With Davis signing a long term deal, Indianapolis has taken the right step in building a solid defensive unit that will help ensure the Colts competing for a playoff berth in 2014 and beyond.
