The National Football League executive Tony Vincent has a vision for the future–creating and expanding the NFL’s developmental league. The National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, and National Hockey League have their own minor leagues, so why not the NFL?
Vincent wants to establish one.
“We need to keep the pipeline of talent flowing, and that means for all areas of our game: players, coaches, scouts, game officials. I am responsible to look at whatever the competition committee looks at, and that includes a developmental league,” Vincent told the USA Today.
A few of the NFL experts and analysts were discussing regarding the need to create a new developmental league, if they want to grow the game of football.
“For all this football talent around, we have to create another platform for developing it. Maybe it’s an academy — what would it look like? Maybe it’s spring league; we’ll look to see if there is an appetite for it,” Vincent said.
The NFL used to have a developmental league in Europe, but it was no longer operative. However, if the NFL competition committee wants to re-establish it, they will eventually make an evaluation on whether or not a developmental league is an appropriate idea for the future.
The future establishment of the NFL’s minor league system, sometimes referred to as the farm system, can give the undrafted players or free agents the chance to showcase their talents to the NFL scouts, general managers, or coaches before their names get called up by NFL teams.
