In a move that doesn’t help the Philadelphia Phillies immediately but a move that Ruben Amaro Jr. makes often, the Phillies today traded infielder Ronny Cedeno to the Arizona Diamondbacks for catcher Raywilly Gomez according to Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona.

For the Phillies, they made this move as they needed more catching depth in the system with both Carlos Ruiz and Wil Nieves battling injuries this season. With both Ruiz and Nieves battling injuries, the Phils had to depend on the likes of Cameron Rupp and Koyie Hill.

With the Phillies receiving Gomez, they are getting a 24-year-old catcher who was batting .273 with Double-A Mobile hitting three home runs and driving in 22 RBIs. According to MiLB.com, Gomez will be playing in Triple-A Lehigh Valley for the Phils. For the Diamondbacks getting Cedeno also gives them depth in the minors as the Diamondbacks lost Chris Owings to a shoulder injury.

Cedeno only played seven games with the Phillies and went hitless in nine plate appearances but in the minors with Lehigh Valley, he was batting .286.

You can say this was a win-win for both teams as they needed depth in the minor leagues.
