According to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman, he is hearing that the New York Yankees have talked to the Philadelphia Phillies about outfielder Marlon Byrd but there is nothing imminent at the moment.
If you remember last week, Byrd’s name was being brought up in trade rumors with the Seattle Mariners but those talks seem to be dead in the water right about now.
The Yankees are in the market for a bat but the issue with Byrd is his $8 million salary for next season and his personality. Heyman mentions that there is some doubt regarding how Byrd’s personality will fit in with the Yanks.
If the Yankees do acquire Byrd then they are getting a very solid outfielder. This season with the Phillies, Byrd has a .273 batting average with 20 home runs and 60 RBI. He also has a .321 on base percentage and a .482 slugging percentage.
Basically, he has been one of the most consistent offensive players in the Phillies lineup not named Chase Utley. If Byrd does get traded then you could expect Darin Ruf or Grady Sizemore splitting time in right field.
