New York Jets quarterback Michael Vick was once on top of the NFL world in Atlanta and then it all came crashing down. It came crashing down when he got involved in dog fighting and then sentenced nearly two years in prison for his involvement. For Vick, he did not know if his career or life would ever be the same.
In fact, his life and career started to get better as he was picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles and had a good run with them. That good run with the Eagles got him a contract with the New York Jets this past spring. During Vick’s time in Philly, he became an advocate for animal welfare.
Now you might be asking yourself what does this mean for Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice. If you don’t know the story, Rice assaulted his wife but avoided jail time. He would only be indicted on charges of aggravated assault and only suspended for two games by the NFL.
Now back to the connection to Vick, he believes that Rice has to makes amends for what he did and not only through words but actually showing with actions. Vick told NJ.com, “I think the most important thing that you can do is to try to make amends for what you’ve done.”
He continues to say, “I think you have to show people that you’re trying to help yourself and bring awareness to that situation to help others, to prevent it. You’ve got to become an advocate.”
Vick is right in this situation because this is a must for Rice. He has to almost take the charge against domestic abuse and he has the platform as he is an athlete. Vick did the same as he talked about himself becoming an advocate and making amends.
You’ve got to continue to make amends. Once you start something, you can never go back. I feel like I’ve become an advocate of animal welfare, and I think I have to continue that. It’s all about keeping kids 15 years from now from doing the same. We’ve saved a lot of kids, and we’ve saved a lot of animals. That’s how I feel. Ray will make it right. He’ll do everything he can to make this situation whole again.
We can only hope that Rice takes Vick’s advice and make amends for what he has done.
