With it being announced today that quarterback G.J. Kinne has been released, the Philadelphia Eagles currently have three quarterbacks on their roster. They are Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez and Matt Barkley. Foles and Sanchez have looked great this preseason while Barkley looked solid in last night’s game versus the New York Jets.
But even before last night’s game against the Jets, many people thought that Kinne was in competition wit Barkley for the third quarterback job and it sure looked like that for a while. Barkley eventually pulled away but has been inconsistent throughout his short NFL career thus far which leads to this.
According to Tom Pelissero of USA TODAY, former Buffalo Bills quarterback Thad Lewis, who was cut three days ago had a tryout with the Eagles. Should Matt Barkley be concerned? Yes, Lewis is a mobile quarterback unlike him and was a solid backup last season in Buffalo when E.J. Manuel went down with injury.
Last season, Lewis in six games threw for 1,092 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also had a 59.2 completion percentage and an 81.0 quarterback rating.
In the past, Matt Barkley has let it known he could be a starter in the NFL on numerous occasions. Does this mean there is a possible trade in the works or will the Eagles straight up cut ties with him? Who knows but the next 48 hours should be interesting as teams across the league cut their roster down to 53 players.
