Today, the Penn State Nittany Lions found out that they will once again be bowl eligible and have their scholarships restored. According to the NCAA Executive Committee, Penn State has made significant progress towards the athletics department with integrity.
This is great news for Penn State as they will not only get to play in a bowl game but possibly compete for a playoff berth in the new college football playoff. Also, the school will get all 85 football scholarships back in 2015-16.
Northern Arizona University President Rita Hartung Cheng, who chaired the Executive Committee Meeting on Monday, said “Penn State’s commitment to the integrity of its athletics department and its progress toward meeting the requirements of the Consent Decree are clear.” For the Nittany Lions, this is good news not only for the athletics department but for the school.
Ever since the Jerry Sandusky scandal, there has been a black cloud hanging over the school for what took place. With the change that happened on the football field, athletics department, and university you could see that brighter days were on the horizon. On the football field, you started to see change when Bill O’Brien was the head coach there for two years as he was changing the culture. Now, this season you have James Franklin at the helm and he is creating a new culture that is piggybacking off of O’Brien’s.
Brighter days are now here for Penn State and it will be interesting to see how the rest of this plays out for the next few years.
