A pair of Penn State wide receivers were added to the Biletnikoff Award watch list on Tuesday. The Biletnikoff Award is given annually to the top receiver in college football. According to the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, wide receivers DaeSean Hamilton and Geno Lewis both have had good enough seasons throughout their first three games to be added to the watchlist with 10 other worthy candidates on Tuesday afternoon.
Both wide receivers were unknown to not most of the college football world coming into the season and possibly even to some Penn State faithful. Lewis, who made flashes in the 2013 season, was regularly under the shadow of former Penn State great Allen Robinson. Hamilton may be the most surprising player for Penn State thus far this season after missing the entire 2013 season due to a hand injury.
Both wide receivers rank in the top fifteen receivers in college football with just thirty yards separating the two between the number five (Geno Lewis) and number 13 (DaeSean Hamilton) rankings . By doing so, the two wideouts are arguably the most dynamic duo in college football this season so far , as no other school has two wide receivers in the top 20.
Lewis this season has made big play after big play for the Nittany Lions with two huge catches against UCF and Rutgers. His longest touchdown this season was a 79-yarder against Central Florida. This past Saturday, Lewis had a catch of 53-yards that helped move the Nittany Lions into Rutgers’ territory before making a 23-yard catch that ultimately set up the games winning touchdown. Through three games, Lewis has made 20 receptions for 367 yards and one touchdown, already eclipsing last years’ stats of 18 catches for 234 yards.
This season, Hamilton is in the top ten in the nation in receptions with 26 which leads the Big Ten. His first career start was his coming out party as he had 11 catches for 165 yards. He has yet to bring down a touchdown this season, but has been able to rack up 337 yards on his 26 receptions. He had a key play during Penn State’s comeback last Saturday against Rutgers which brought the Nittany Lions into field goal range which helped get Penn State back into the game when they were down 10-3 late in the fourth quarter. .
Together, Lewis and Hamilton have made 44 receptions for 704 yards and a touchdown which accounts for 55-percent of Christian Hackenberg’s completions and 65-percent of Hackenberg’s 1,082 passing yards.
Only time will tell if the dynamic duo of Lewis and Hamilton will stay this dominant but at the current time it looks as nothing will stop these two from giving defenses nightmares.
