When you have the last name of Graves. You have to be a defenseman in the NHL, right? The puns just write themselves.

Today, the Columbus Blue Jackets announced that they signed Jacob Graves to a standard three-year entry level contract. Graves, a recent Memorial Cup winner with the London Knights was a development camp invite this past week. The 21 year old defender had himself quite a postseason with 10 points in 18 games.

Graves is another in a long line of defensemen that seemingly fit the Blue Jackets mold. They seem to target larger players that aren’t exactly offensive dynamos. Ryan Collins, Dillon Heatherington and Oleg Yevenko are a few names that come to mind when thinking about the Jackets plan on defense. It will continue to be a work in progress but that type of defensemen has yet to yield any promising results for the Columbus Hockey Blue Jackets.

That isn’t to say that you should immediately dismiss Graves. He will be valuable depth for the AHL team and will have time to develop. This will be an ideal situation for him as he will get every chance to grow as a player and percolate in the minors.

Has anyone made the fan page about the Gravediggers yet?
