Redskins OLB Brian Orakpo headed to IR

The Washington Redskins won their second game on Sunday putting their overall record at 2-5. The victory means very little compared to the loss the defense suffered on the field. Pro Bowl OLB Brian Orakpo is out for the rest of the 2014 season with a torn pectoral muscle. Orakpo has now torn a pectoral muscle for the third time in his career. Most recently, he tore his left pectoral muscle in week 2 of the 2012 season causing him to miss the entire year.

This past offseason, the Redskins placed a non-exclusive franchise tag worth $11.45 million on Orakpo, which he signed in late March. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

Redskins’ faithful may have to deal with the reality that they have watched Brian Orakpo play his last game in the burgundy and gold. The Redskins may have seen this coming last spring when they drafted the nation’s sack leader OLB Trent Murphy out of Stanford in the second round. Murphy has been Orakpo’s backup all season so he will now presumably step into the starting role opposite Ryan Kerrigan.

The Redskins have now lost two of their three best defenders in Brian Orakpo, DeAngelo Hall, and Ryan Kerrigan. Then, if you also add the loss of starting quarterback Robert Griffin III, the 2-5 record is almost impressive.
