The Philadelphia Phillies ended this season on a horrible note. From injuries to aging players, the franchise is currently on the downswing. With that being said, they could be adding a player that would help the franchise immediately.
According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, he reports that “people involved in the process now identify the Phillies as strong contenders for Tomas.” Martino also reports that the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers are far less likely contenders for the Cuban outfielder.
If you do not know who Yasmany Tomas is, he is a Cuban outfielder that was declared a free agent a few weeks ago and is a power hitter. For the Phillies, this is something that they desperately need as Marlon Byrd was the only outfielder that provided significant power in the outfield. This season, Byrd hit 25 home runs and drove in 85 RBI with a .264 batting average.
Also from Martino’s piece, a rival executive said that Tomas makes a lot of sense for the Phillies. The Phillies are in need of youth especially in the outfield and Tomas can provide that as he is only 23-years old. Another reason, why people think the Phillies are front runners because GM Ruben Amaro Jr. took a trip down to the Dominican Republic to personally scout him.
If the Phillies want Tomas’ services they are going to have to pony up some cash. This means that could the Phillies could get into a bidding war for his services which could easily come up to a $100 million deal.
The Phillies need to make a change for the future of their franchise and it starts by signing a player like Tomas. He could be a piece to the puzzle for a Phillies rebuild.
