This week, the Philadelphia 76ers should be getting back reigning Rookie of the Year point guard Michael Carter-Williams as he will see his first action of the regular season. They also might get some more help in terms of scoring and shooting from NBA D-League player Robert Covington.
According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, he says to look for the Sixers to sign Covington this week as he was the first pick in this year’s NBA D-League Draft to the Grand Rapids Drive, the Detroit Pistons affiliate.

Last season in the NBA D-League as a rookie, Covington was named Rookie of the Year as he averaged 23.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. This was with the Houston Rockets’ D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Covington’s game works well with the Sixers as he is shooter and can score. Scott Rafferty of Ridiculous Upside wrote about all the phases of Covington’s game. From Rafferty’s piece, he mentions how last season in the D-League, Covington was a 37 percent three point shooter, he can drive to the basket and is also a 84.3 percent free throw shooter. All aspects in which the Sixers need help in.
So far this season, the Sixers are shooting 33.1 percent from three point range and 64.7 percent from the free throw line. When Covington does get signed he should help the Sixers right away as they are in year two of the rebuilding process.
Here is a highlight mix of Covington’s 2013-14 Rookie of the Year season:
