This offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies did a major overhaul to their roster including trading away veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Also lost in the overhaul, backup catcher Wil Nieves signed a deal with the San Diego Padres leaving a gap their as well.

To fill those gaps, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN.com, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro told him he will look to deal for a veteran shortstop and catcher rather than adding both before Spring Training.

If you currently look at the Phillies depth chart, their opening day starter at shortstop is Freddy Galvis and they will most likely need a backup to supply what he lacks in certain aspects of his game. Then if you take a look at catcher, Carlos Ruiz is the starter with Cameron Rupp backing him up. In limited playing time last season, Rupp played in 18 games, batted .183 and only had six RBI. So there is a need at catcher for more depth especially if Ruiz gets moved during the course of the season.
