Report: Eagles passed on a trade revolving around Nick Foles, Josh Gordon

Could you imagine if Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon played in Philadelphia in Chip Kelly’s offense and Nick Foles was in Cleveland possibly being the franchise quarterback? Well that almost happened back in 2013.

According to Phil Sheridan of ESPN.com, when former Eagles vice president Joe Banner was running the Browns, he offered Gordon to the Eagles for Foles. To bring a little bit of history to this situation, the deal was offered when Gordon was facing a two-game suspension in 2013 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and Foles was the number two quarterback as Michael Vick beat him out for the starting spot.

Who knew that the 2013 season were going to be banner years for both Gordon and Foles. Foles stepped in Vick after he injured his hamstring against the Giants and helped lead the Eagles to a NFC East division crown and a playoff appearance. He also had a fantastic stat line of 2,891 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, two interceptions and a passer rating of 119.2.

Gordon was pretty good himself as he had 1,646 yards on 87 receptions and nine touchdowns. Both were named to the Pro Bowl that season.

This past season, was not good for both players as Gordon got in trouble again and Foles was a turnover machine and injured his collarbone in week eight, which put him out for the rest of the year.

As an Eagles fan, you might be wondering what stopped the Eagles from trading for Gordon. Here is more from Sheridan:

“The Eagles, in their first year with head coach Chip Kelly, were concerned about Gordon’s impending suspension. They were also high on Foles.”

It looks like the Eagles were scared of what was coming for Gordon but saw a future in Foles. Now both players’ futures are in jeopardy as Gordon might not play another down in the NFL and Foles has been the subject of trade rumors.
