Last Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles released tight end James Casey as it saved them $4 million in cap space for free agency. Today, it looks like they will be making another cap casualty move. According to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com, the Eagles will release veteran offensive lineman Todd Herremans.
This move was a shocker to many Eagles fans as Herremans has been a consistent offensive lineman for the birds for his entire career lining up at multiple positions except center. With the Eagles releasing the veteran offensive lineman, he will be an unrestricted free agent.
Herremans has been in the league for 10 years and appeared in 127 games for the Eagles since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2005 draft. Majority of his time spent with the Eagles, Herremans lined up on the right side as recent years saw Jason Peters and Evan Mathis be stalwarts on the left side.
When the Eagles do make the release of Herremans official, they will not have to pay his $4 million base salary for this upcoming season and they will have then created $2.8 million in cap space. With the presume departure of Herremans, the Eagles will now have to fill his spot in free agency or with someone the roster. The possible candidates to fill his role are Matt Tobin, Andrew Gardner, and Allen Barbre.
Update: According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the release of Herremans won’t happen today but should over the next several days.
