According to Jayson Braddock of KBME SportsTalk 790 in Houston, the Philadelphia Eagles and free agent cornerback Byron Maxwell have reached an agreement on a deal.
Braddock also reports that Maxwell will get a five-year deal around $53 t0 54 million. Both FOX Sports 1’s Mike Garafolo and the Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski can confirm Maxwell’s deal as he will get $25 million guaranteed.
The Eagles get their number one guy in free agency as they coveted him for a while. Over his four-year career, Maxwell carved out his own personality within the Seahawks secondary aka the Legion of Boom. This season, Maxwell was starting opposite of Richard Sherman and stepped up big time. He had two interceptions and 10 pass deflections while starting in 12 out of 13 games.
With Maxwell coming to Philadelphia, he will now be the number one corner as he will be making shutdown corner money. The question now is will Maxwell be able to be that shutdown corner that the Eagles have been yearning for years?
Well, according to PhillyMag.com, Maxwell expressed his interest in playing for the Eagles on March 5.
“Definitely,” he said. “They run the schemes that I’m talking about – Cover 3 and man press. And they’re committed to winning. Definitely, Philadelphia, if they were to come at me, I would have to consider them.”
It will be interesting to see how Maxwell’s tenure will turn out in Philadelphia. Will it be a great one or will he be the next Nnamdi Asomugha?
