This offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles have made it a priority to address the secondary as the 2014 season showed that they must upgrade both cornerback positions and safety spot. Thus far, the Eagles have addressed the cornerback position by signing Byron Maxwell and Walter Thurmond but could still use another corner for more depth. But, they have not addressed the safety position which leads me to believe that they will draft one to play next to Malcolm Jenkins.
According to Dane Brugler of CBSSports.com, the Eagles and four other teams have privately worked out Utah Utes safety Brian Blechen. Brugler believes that Blechen is a solid late round pick.
Blechen is 6-foot-2 and 210 lbs and started all four years at safety (48 games), while this past season being named Honorable mention All-Pac-12. In 2014, he had six pass breakups, an interception, a forced fumble and fumble recovery. He also was named Honorable mention All-Pac-12 in 2012 as he missed the entire 2013 season with an injury. In 2012, he started in nine games and played eight of those at strong safety but one at rover linebacker.
This goes with what Brugler said on Twitter, as he mentioned that Blechen could be a sub package linebacker and special teams guy.
If you are a late round pick, one way to make it onto a NFL roster is special teams. If Blechen can play special teams and do the little things at safety, then I do not see why the Eagles should not take a chance on him.
