Any store that still has “Tebow Time!” t-shirts for sale, from three years ago may finally get a chance to sell them, if they have not already cut their losses.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Tim Tebow have agreed to a one-year deal that will allow him a chance to make the roster this upcoming season. Although the particulars of the deal are unclear, it is believed that the deal is completely contingent upon Tebow making the roster, which will not be an easy path.
Tebow’s chance to become anything but the team’s third quarterback is non-existent so anyone who believes that he can beat Mark Sanchez and make an appearance during the season as the primary backup needs to hold their horses.
It has been speculated that Tebow has improved his throwing mechanics and accuracy significantly enough to acquire a workout last month but no one could determine whether Chip Kelly was seriously considering giving the 27-year-old quarterback a shot. Now that he has one, he will need to prove that he can run an offense that requires timely throwing, accuracy, tempo, and decisive reads.
It would be tough to imagine Tebow displaying those kinds of skills on the NFL level since he has been out of football for almost three years. Tebow would also have to prove that he is a better quarterback than Matt Barkley and GJ Kinne. For those who do not know either player, Tebow is not exactly a lock to make the first cut of the preseason so the 53-man roster is going to be a long shot.
A really long shot.
It would be a mistake to think that this signing is anything more than Kelly and his coaches kicking the tires on a guy that actually has game experience. Doing their due diligence at every position is not surprising from this staff. Actually believing that Tim Tebow was the best option at quarterback on the market is a surprise.
That workout last month must have really proved something special to the coaching staff. Let’s hope that translates to the practice field, for Tebow’s sake.
