With the NFL Draft only a week away there is more speculation building that the Philadelphia Eagles could make a trade for Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. To move up to select Mariota, it would take trading quarterback Sam Bradford and mortgaging the future.
On Thursday, Eagles V.P. of player personnel Ed Marynowitz met with the media to have a pre-draft “reporters round table.” During that round table, there was a question about whether the Eagles will trade up from pick 20 to select Mariota.
Marynowitz began saying that philosophically they are against ‘mortgaging the future’ as Chip Kelly put it. Here is more from Marynowitz.
“Really, the way we look at it is draft picks — every draft pick you have is an opportunity to improve your football team. So the more opportunities we have to improve our team, we’re excited about that. So I’d rather have more picks than less picks. I think Chip shares the same philosophy. That doesn’t preclude us from moving up and doing something. I think you never say never. But, philosophically, we have eight picks and we’d like to pick eight players or more, not less.”
It is great to hear that Marynowitz believes in keeping draft picks but he does not exactly shut the door on trading up. When it comes to moving up for Mariota, I would not be surprised if Kelly pulls the trigger on draft night but as for right now it is all a mystery. The only person, who knows what is going to happen is Kelly and he will do whatever it takes to make sure his guy is in Philadelphia next Thursday night.
