Michael Sam has finally been given another chance to play football. On Friday, the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL announced that they have signed Sam to a two-year deal.
Sam, the former SEC Defensive Player of Year at Missouri announced before the 2014 NFL Draft that he was gay. Sam would then get drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams. In four preseason games with the Rams, Sam dominated with 11 tackles and three sacks. Despite playing well, he was one of the final cuts to get to the 53-man roster.
Then Sam got another chance to play in the NFL as he was signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad. Sam did not last long on the Cowboys’ practice squad as he was released in October.
Finally, in March, Sam gave the NFL one more shot as he participated in the league’s first veteran combine. After the combine, Sam was asked if the CFL was still an option.
He responded with, “If that’s an opportunity, then I will take it.”
With Sam playing in the CFL, he will now get a chance to show and develop his pass rushing skills. If he succeeds with his development and puts up good numbers, then the NFL will be calling his name once again.
