When NBA Free Agency opened up shortly after midnight, the San Antonio Spurs made it a priority to lock up forward Kawhi Leonard.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Spurs presented a max contract extension to Leonard’s representatives and the forward has agreed to a five-year deal that could worth more than $90 million. The max deal is well deserved for Leonard as he has taken his game to the next level.
The 2011 first round pick out of San Diego State made the league take notice of him when he had an outstanding NBA Finals in the 2013-14 season against LeBron James and the Miami Heat. Leonard played out of his mind averaging 17.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 33.4 minutes per game. He also played fantastic defense on James, which led him to winning NBA Finals MVP.
This past season, the Spurs were eliminated in the first round of the NBA Playoffs in seven games but Leonard still performed. He averaged 20.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 35.7 minutes per game as the Spurs continue to make him a focal point of the offense.
Finally, Leonard also won the NBA’s 2014-15 Defensive Player of the Year award to add to his accolades. With Leonard now out of the way, the Spurs can focus on LaMarcus Aldridge, who according to Wojnarowski says that San Antonio are frontrunners for his services.
