Second-year linebacker Marcus Smith came into the 2015 preseason knowing that it’s all or nothing for him. Unfortunately, Smith’s path to redemption has been haulted as he was diagnosed with a hamstring injury.
Smith was carted off the field during Thursday’s joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens. Although this will be a blow to his fight for a roster spot, Smith assured reporters that he should be back on the field before the conclusion of training camp. He is expected to have an MRI today to determine the severity of his injury.
As the 2014 first round pick for the Eagles, Smith had an underwhelming rookie campaign and barely saw the field. Now, he is competing for a chance at backing up the likes of Connor Barwin and Brandon Graham.
With Smith out of action, the Eagles will now turn to inside linebackers Brad Jones and Emmanuel Acho to cross-train for the position. With Travis Long heading to IR with yet another ACL tear, Smith may have a glimmer of hope once he returns.
