Every day since Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden named Kirk Cousins the starting quarterback, there seems to be new developments involving the future of quarterback Robert Griffin III.
All signs point to RG3 finding a new team as some in the Redskins’ organization believe that Cousins can get the job done. But if Washington does decide to trade or release Griffin III, where could he go?
ESPN’s Josina Anderson spoke to a Redskins offensive starter, who sees Robert Griffin III with the Philadelphia Eagles. The player told Anderson, “Philly. I think he could be really good there. That is what he ran in college. That’s the type of system that I’m sure he can imagine himself in…knowing how fast-paced it is, knowing how he can run, seeing what Nick Foles did in it, what Michael Vick did in it.. I think he would definitely thrive.”
This statement is true because at Baylor, RG3 played in a quick pace, spread offense that allowed him to run the read option, plus use his legs and arm. The player also added that he would not like to prepare against an angry Robert Griffin III.
During Chip Kelly’s tenure thus far in Philadelphia, we have seen what he has done with quarterbacks such as Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez, and to an extent Matt Barkley and Tim Tebow. This preseason, we saw what Sam Bradford can do in this offense just ask the Packers’ first team defense, where he torched them for 121 yards and three touchdowns.
Chip Kelly’s offense is quarterback friendly and has the quarterback making easy throws and reads. It also helps that the quarterback is accurate, which we are seeing with Bradford. The offense looks that much more scary.
If the Redskins do release Griffin III, he would thrive in the Eagles’ offense because Philadelphia has weapons at the receiver position, a strong running game and a good offensive line. Plus Griffin III is becoming an accurate passer, as he finished last season with a 68.7 completion percentage.
