College Football Top 25 – Week 5

Edmonton Oilers v Pittsburgh Penguins

As we end week 4 and head into week 5, teams are beginning to show who they are. Oregon is not as good as we thought. Michigan is surging. Temple is showing that they can be a real player in the Top 25 and Ohio State has shown some flaws. This week will bring even more clarity as teams begin their conference schedules.

Here is our College Football Top 25 for Week 5:

  1. Ohio State – It seems that much has been made about Ohio State’s struggles in the mainstream media. It could be their subpar quarterback play or their close game against the Northern Illinois Huskies. Either way, the Buckeyes have dominated all but one game. They have outscored their opponents 138-62 and will continue to improve that ratio with games against Indiana and Maryland. Their next tough game will come against Penn State on October 17 and then they will have about a month to prepare for their last two games of the season against Michigan State and then traveling to Ann Arbor, Michigan to face off against the Michigan Wolverines. In order for the Buckeyes to keep their top spot, they must dominate their next six opponents (Indiana, Maryland, Penn State, Rutgers, Minnesota and Illinois).
  2. Ole Miss – After their biggest win of the year, a huge resume builder, against the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Rebels struggled a bit in Oxford against Vanderbilt. On one hand, we expected them to dominate the Commodores, but on the other hand, we knew they would be coming down from an emotional win against Alabama in Tuscaloosa. They will face off against Florida this week in Gainesville. A convincing win against the Gators could conceivably vault them into our number one spot.
  3. LSU – Leonard Fournette has put the Tigers on his back for the 2015 season and shows no signs of slowing down. LSU handed an overrated Auburn team a 45-21 loss followed by a 34-24 win at Syracuse. LSU should run the table until November 7 when they travel to Tuscaloosa to meet an angry Alabama Crimson Tide team followed by a game in Oxford two weeks later against a supremely talented Ole Miss Rebels team.
  4. Michigan State – Michigan’s biggest win of the season came at home against the Oregon Ducks. We now know that Oregon isn’t the team everyone thought they would be at the beginning of the season. Michigan State has to, convincingly, win their next two games against Purdue and Rutgers before facing a surging Michigan Wolverines team in Ann Arbor on October 17.
  5. Notre Dame – One of the most surprising teams of the season, the Fighting Irish have continued to win despite an injury to their starting quarterback (Malik Zaire) and despite using their wide receiver turned feature running back (CJ Prosise). Notre Dame will play Clemson in a season defining game this week.
